Professor Helmut Flachenecker is an internationally renowned scholar in the field of the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period, and a prominent figure in European academic life. He has played a significant role in Central European scholarly cooperation, research programmes, editing and publication of scholarly volumes, book series, lexicons, and the organisation of international conferences.
At the University of Würzburg, he is head of the Institute for the Study of the Teutonic Order and president of the International Historical Commission for the Study of the Teutonic Order, an international academic society representing almost all European countries. This society, which counts a professor from our university among its members, held its 2022 academic conference and general assembly in Debrecen.
Professor Flachenecker has visited the University of Debrecen several times, giving lectures and seminars to PhD students in English. As an editor, he contributes to the publication of academic papers and volumes in English and German by colleagues researching and teaching medieval history in Debrecen, and as an author he also contributes to the promotion of local publications and their international recognition.
He has played a major role in enabling the historians researching the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period in Debrecen to establish an extensive international network, to participate in prestigious conferences and to publish in reputable volumes. It is thanks to him, among others, that medieval and early modern historical research at the University of Debrecen has been placed on the map of the international academic world.
