Dr. János Péntek is one of the most eminent personalities of contemporary Hungarian linguistics.
His academic work does not only comprise various fields of linguistics, but due to his comprehensive interest and interdisciplinary openness, also other academic branches. He has made a great contribution to the fields of sociolinguistics, dialectology, contact and minority linguistics, as well as language politics and planning. Furthermore, his work also touches upon significantly certain areas of ethnology, ethnobotanics and also cultural history.
János Péntek's work is closely linked with Transylvanian academic life, more specifically to the city of Cluj. As a professor of the Babeş-Bolyai University, he has an indelible merit in the high-quality education of Hungarian-related subjects, as well as in the establishment of the Szabó T. Attila Institute, which is the Transylvanian academic centre of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He has played a prominent role in the harmonising process of the linguistic research of external regions, especially in the programme targeting the deletion of boundaries of the Hungarian language.
He has been in close academic contact with the University of Debrecen for over four decades, in various areas of education and research.
János Péntek's scientific and educative work, as well as his entire lifework contrubutes to a great deal to the intellectual and cultural unity of Hungarians.
